Overview

Scoliom is an App providing customized rehabilitation treatment to the children with scoliosis by a avatar-style tutorial to make them engaged with the exercises as a routine for long-term insistence. This service tries to improve childrenโ€™s wellbeing who live in cities of limited medical resources that canโ€™t afford the expense and cost of it.

Research

Due to the limited medical resources in small town of China, the preliminary treatment requires a costly travel and inquiry to get knowledge of some expert exercises for regular practice in relief of it.

For sake of expense and long-term devotion, most families canโ€™t insist on carrying it through. This leave children with scoliosis untreated thoroughly.

Secondary Research

In studys (35th Annual Meeting. 2001. ; Mayo et al 1994, Spine 19:1573):

Interview

To gain a deeper understanding of the lives and challenges faced by children with scoliosis, I conducted interviews with four individualsโ€”either scoliosis patients themselves or parents of children with the condition.

Painpoints

โš ๏ธ Costly Travel

Limited access to qualified resources in underdeveloped cities leads to expensive, long-distance travel for treatment.

โš ๏ธ Commitment Issues

Long-term, non-immediate results demotivate children, leading to abandoned treatment.

โš ๏ธ Customization Hurdles

Tailored treatment plans essential for individual needs are hard to generalize, requiring professional diagnosis.

Design Goals

โ›ณ Engage Children: Focus on making the rehabilitation process interesting rather than disciplinary.

โ›ณ Accessible Customization: Enable remote access to customized exercise plans

โ›ณ Routine-Based Approach: Simplify the rehabilitation process into a regular routine for easier adherence.

Final Design

๐ŸŒŸ Affordable Customization

After completing a brief questionnaire, users can quickly populate their profiles, allowing for personalized rehabilitation plans.

Development information

Scoliosis Conditions

After filling out information, users would get final info checklist to have an overall check of their status.

๐ŸŒŸ Avatar Simulation

Users can follow the tutorial presented by the avatar to better guide their actions.

๐ŸŒŸ Self-scheduled time

Users set their time to better manage their exercises and form the habit suitable for their time slots.

๐ŸงWhat I learned

This is my first UX project, and the unfamiliarity with the subject matter made the initial research particularly challenging. However, through trial and error as well as significant time investment, I progressed from being completely clueless to becoming quite adept at handling the project.

I learned the importance of User Flow, especially in designing an app for a topic that has little to no existing frameworks. It helped to clarify my thought process and lent logical coherence to the app design.

I also discovered the value of Usability Testing. For an app type that users are entirely unfamiliar with, usability tests exposed various shortcomings in my design. These insights allowed for timely improvements to enhance the overall user experience.
